Imagine a hero who is the epitome of all virtues. He is the diamond hearted school teacher of director M Mohanan’ s Manikyakkallu, who singlehandedly changes the fortunes of a soon to be defunct government school and of course the lives of a few children in the process. When he joins Vannanmala Govt Model School in a remote village on his own request, Vinayachandran (Prithviraj) knows that he has a difficult task at hand. The school, which used to produce great results, had become a centre of indiscipline. The teachers are not interested about academics or the results. Like for instance, the headmaster Kurup (Nedumudi Venu) was running a fertilizer business and even the young PT teacher Chandni (Samvrutha Sunil)is trying to make some fast bucks by selling eggs or teaching yoga. Vinayachandran patiently encourages everyone to change their ways, which includes a brash hooch maker, played by Jagathy Sreekumar. By all means, you may imagine some sudden happenings or flashback is sure to surface that will take the storyline ahead, in true masala entertainer style. No such luck here, this territory belongs to the angel-hearts! Now, there is absolutely no problem in showing sincere characters that don’ t do anything bad at all, but things tend to get dull after a while and the whole film looks a bit old fashioned, in the one dimensional format. The hero is deified to the extent that the audience may find it difficult to relate to the character’ s innocence, after a while. Mohanan, who has written the script as well, had earlier directed Kadha Parayumbol (which was remade into Tamil as Kuselan and in Hindi as Billu). He has made the story look too simple that it even looks highly pretentious and clichĂ©d. P Sukumar’ s visuals are okay while M Jayachandran’ s music is top notch. Prithviraj and Samvrutha have done their jobs the way the script demanded. The rest of the characters are mainly caricatures to show people of varying natures and often becomes half baked. Manikyakkallu reminds of the films produced by Rajshri pictures in Hindi, where the heroes are all white and the embodiment of honesty or even some of those boring TV serials. If you are looking forward to watch some dramatic happenings, twists and turns or the likes, this one will disappoint you. Now, decide on your own!
