Young superstar Prithviraj on
Tuesday defended the growing
trend of ‘remakes’ in
Malayalam cinema. Talking to mediapersons here,
the actor said he did not feel it
was dearth of stories that was
prompting film-makers to do
remakes. Prithviraj is himself starring in a
remake of the 1989 Mohanlal hit
Naduvazhikal and is also planning
to redo his father Sukumaran’s
critically acclaimed early 80s film
‘Vilkkanundu Swapnangal’. “I am inspired by these films and
want to redo them in a different
way,” he said. He added that he had always
been fascinated by ‘Godfather’
penned by Mario Puzo and filmed
by Francis Ford Coppola. “My
father gave me the book and I
have read it a dozen times,” he said. “And who is not fascinated by
that movie. Naduvazhikal is the
Malayalam version of Godfather
and that is why I wanted to
remake it.” Prithviraj added that his
father’s performance in
‘Vilkanundu Swapnangal’ was
one of his best and this
prompted him to do that film
again. “This is something deeply personal,” he said. “Perhaps
you can even term it selfish.” The young star said that his
next film was Ranjith’s “Indian
Rupee,’ a satirical look at how
money changes the lives of
youth.
