The invasion of Kollywood

Kollywood heroes such as Vijay, Suriya, Vikram and Sarath Kumar have a cult following that surpass that of our own youth icons such as Prithviraj.

This is apparent from the posters that can be seen all over the State and right besides Mollywood posters too!

Vijay understands his fans very well and made it a point to visit Kochi on Saturday to promote his forthcoming film Velayudham.

In fact, so intense are the feelings of his fans that all the junior artists needed for the final scene of the film, which had to be shot in a stadium in Kochi, were filled buy his fans themselves.

Few have come close to the lover boy image Vijay has portrayed, not to mention his talent for dancing and singing.

Vijay says, “I am happy that the Kerala audience has been a big part of my success.” He was also a present in Thiruvananthapuram to celebrate the success of his earlier films Pokkiri and Vettakaran.

Another actor who makes girls go gaga over him at any of the theatre screenings of his films is Vikram. Boys secretly vow to hit the gyms to develop similar biceps.

Keralites have always considered Vikram to be their ‘own Kerala boy’ long before he was claimed by Kollywood. Many of his fans in Kerala claim him because had done small roles with Mammootty, Suresh Gopi and Jayaram even before Kollywood knew him.

His visits to the State have always created intense media and fan frenzy. Fans of all ages adore him for his acting and his humble, down-to-earth attitude. Being a Malayali at heart, he reciprocates this sentiment.

He says, “There cannot be happier news than that! It is wonderful to know that one of the most perceptive and knowledgeable audience in the nation likes my work and I love my Kerala fans.”

Many Kollywood films are dubbed in Malayalam and screened on various television channels. Sarath Kumar as ‘Edachena Kungan’ in Pazhassi Raja garnered a lot of adulation as Mammootty did.

He acted in various Mollywood movies and has a set of loyalists who swear by his skills. On a recent visit to Guruvayoor, he was amazed by the attention of his fans and says, “I was touched by the love, hugs and affection shown by the Malayali audience who have always encouraged and consistently applauded my performances. I feel very emotional about their support and acceptance of me.”

When 12-year-old Sreya cuts out his pictures from magazines and sticks them on her cupboard, it’s not for his acting skills but loves his looks and song sequences.

Suriya’s fan following is legendary with the rights of his new film 7 Aum Arivu reportedly sold for a whopping Rs 2.50 crore in Kerala alone. This is a star in absentia, yet very popular with the Malayali cine goers.

Kollywood superstars with their looks, choreographed dances and stunts are capturing Malayali cine-goer’s hearts. It’s a sort of a reply to Mollywood beauties, who are making a mark in Kollywood.
