Manorama - ’ Urumi’ - swish of the swirling

blade Seldom remembered, they remain
lost in the brittle pages of
history. The unrecorded tales of
their valorous patriotism too
have gone with the wind.
But, such forgotten heroes are thrust before us all of a sudden,
when a film is made on their life
saga. 'Urumi' is one such film that
revolves around the life of the
young Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar,
whose mission was to slay the Portuguese traveller Vasco Da
Gama, the Viceroy of Portugese
empire in India.
Dating back to sixteenth
century, the story is set in the
back drop of the fierce warrior clans of Northern Kerala. Spread
between the second and third
visit of Gama to India, the film
gets an exciting twist as to how
Gama could have met with a
bloody death in AD 1524. The plot is intricately woven and
is well-supported with historical
facts such as the ship being set
on fire and drowned on Vasco da
Gama's orders, during his second
visit to Kerala in AD 1502. 'Urumi' (the word meaning a long
s word made of flexible steel),
takes the structure of a ballad,
and unfolds through the conflicts
that Kelu has to encounter
during his tumultuous times. Equipped with his golden 'Urumi,'
specially made from the
or naments of women and
children who were burnt alive in
the Mecca ship, and aided by
Vavvali, his childhood friend who hails from a Muslim family, Kelu
Nayanar spear heads a revolt,
the first of its kind against the
colonial advance in India.
Directed by ace cinemato grapher
Santhosh Sivan, Urumi has Pritviraj in the lead role of theepic character. Prithviraj seems
to be bankable after the
box office success of "Anwar",
and "Thriller." 'Pokkiri Raja ' which
he did with Mammootty, was the biggest commercial hit of 2010.
The epic narrative is rich in its
cast with Vidya Balan, Genelia
D'souza, Alexx Onell, Tabu,
Prabhudeva, Jagathy Sreekumar,
Amol Gupte and Arya. The star- studded Urumi is the second
most expensive Malayalam movie,
next only to Mammootty-starrer
Pazhassiraja. The film is produced
by Shaji Natesan, Santosh Sivan
and Prithviraj under the banner of the newly-formed August
Cinemas.
With Kerala Café fame Sankar
Ramakrishnan as its script
writer, expectations soar high
for Urumi, which is Santhosh Sivan's second historical film
after 'Ashoka'.
Pritvi Raj is associating with
Santhosh Sivan for the third
time, after Anandabadram and
Ravanan. Pritviraj had earlier said that Urumi was wholly
Santhosh's idea with the
proposal being made during the
shoot of Anandabadram, and the
project finalised during the shoot
of Ravanan.
