In the Indian context, the
maximum number of dubbed films
release in Tamil cinema. Hollywood, Tollywood, Mollywood
and now, even Bollywood films,
are getting dubbed into Tamil.
Says a Tamil film industry
spokes person, "Dubbed films
generate an income of over ` 100 crore every year. In other
states like Karnataka, there are
strict laws regarding dubbing to
protect the local industry. But
here, even Tamil channels — mainly controlled by political
parties — depend on dubbed film content." Every year, around 150 to 200
films from other languages get
dubbed into Tamil without much
publicity. Some of them have a
theatrical release while others
are sold to television channels. However, last year, due to a
record number of original Tamil
releases, theatres in Tamil Nadu
had plenty of choice. But now, due to the World Cup
and the on going examination
season, straight Tamil film
releases have come down to a
trickle. Theatres, mainly single
screens in small towns and villages, are scouting for films as
occupancy levels have decreased.
Says Murugan, a theatre owner
in Chengalpet, "We have to
depend on dubbed films till April
15, which is when some big Tamil films are slated for release. I'm
now playing the dubbed version
of the Malayalam film Anwar,
which has stars known in Tamil
Nadu like Prithviraj, Prakash Raj
and Mamta. We have a line-up of dubbed films ready for release
till films like Maapillai and Vaanam
are ready." This week, apart from Anwar,
there's the Trisha-Gopichand-
Sathyaraj starrer Sankham,
which has been dubbed from
Telugu into Tamil as
Sivappusamy, to look forward to. Besides, there's a Hollywood film titled World Invasion 2011
(Azhivin Arambam in Tamil). The
producers of NTR's big-budget
summer release Shakthi, said to
be the costliest film in Telugu till
date, is releasing simultaneously along with its Tamil dubbed
version on March 30. Meanwhile, a revolt of sorts is
brewing among a section of the
Tamil producers. They're
demanding that dubbing into
Tamil be stopped to 'save the
local industry.' Says a leading producer, "All kinds of movies,
including sleaze from Bollywood,
are being dubbed into Tamil. It's
certainly eating into the
collections of original Tamil films
in B & C stations."
