Santosh Sivan Releases Latest Visual Feast, ‘ Urumi’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (PTI) — Santosh Sivan-directed “Urumi,” touted as the first global film from Kerala, will soon woo world audiences with its English version, the filmmaker announced April 2.
The multi-star film, which has been in the news since the beginning of its making due to the pan-Indian star cast and multi-crore budget, will be brought out in a host of Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and in English.

The film will hit global theaters with a different screenplay and narration, Sivan said. “Generally, history is written from the perspective of the conqueror. But ‘ Urumi’ is an attempt to read history from the side of the defeated,” Sivan told reporters here.
The film, which opened Mar. 31 starring Prithviraj and Genilia D’ Souza, is rather a representation of historic al facts on a fictional
platform than an accurate narration of history, the ace director said.
“Urumi” is based on the arrival of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in Kozhikode in the 15th century. Tamil choreographer and filmmaker Prabhu Deva, Bollywood actresses Tabu and Vidya Balan, and Malayalam actors Nithya Menon and Jagathy Sreekumar give more grace to the movie, the director said.
Prithviraj, who is also the co- producer of the movie, said “Urumi” was his dream project. “I have the advantage of being with the project right from the conceptual stage. I have even undergone a three-day crash training to learn the handling of an ‘ urumi,’ a weapon used by the bygone warriors of Kerala,” Prithviraj said.
D’ Souza explained, “It was quite different from the other roles which I did so far. The role of the
princess was quite challenging.” Sivan said he was planning to bring out the Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English versions of “Urumi” soon

Anwar : On a dubbing spree Sreedhar Pillai

In the Indian context, the
maximum number of dubbed films
release in Tamil cinema. Hollywood, Tollywood, Mollywood
and now, even Bollywood films,
are getting dubbed into Tamil.
Says a Tamil film industry
spokes person, "Dubbed films
generate an income of over ` 100 crore every year. In other
states like Karnataka, there are
strict laws regarding dubbing to
protect the local industry. But
here, even Tamil channels — mainly controlled by political
parties — depend on dubbed film content." Every year, around 150 to 200
films from other languages get
dubbed into Tamil without much
publicity. Some of them have a
theatrical release while others
are sold to television channels. However, last year, due to a
record number of original Tamil
releases, theatres in Tamil Nadu
had plenty of choice. But now, due to the World Cup
and the on going examination
season, straight Tamil film
releases have come down to a
trickle. Theatres, mainly single
screens in small towns and villages, are scouting for films as
occupancy levels have decreased.
Says Murugan, a theatre owner
in Chengalpet, "We have to
depend on dubbed films till April
15, which is when some big Tamil films are slated for release. I'm
now playing the dubbed version
of the Malayalam film Anwar,
which has stars known in Tamil
Nadu like Prithviraj, Prakash Raj
and Mamta. We have a line-up of dubbed films ready for release
till films like Maapillai and Vaanam
are ready." This week, apart from Anwar,
there's the Trisha-Gopichand-
Sathyaraj starrer Sankham,
which has been dubbed from
Telugu into Tamil as
Sivappusamy, to look forward to. Besides, there's a Hollywood film titled World Invasion 2011
(Azhivin Arambam in Tamil). The
producers of NTR's big-budget
summer release Shakthi, said to
be the costliest film in Telugu till
date, is releasing simultaneously along with its Tamil dubbed
version on March 30. Meanwhile, a revolt of sorts is
brewing among a section of the
Tamil producers. They're
demanding that dubbing into
Tamil be stopped to 'save the
local industry.' Says a leading producer, "All kinds of movies,
including sleaze from Bollywood,
are being dubbed into Tamil. It's
certainly eating into the
collections of original Tamil films
in B & C stations."

Anwar [Tamil] : Preview

Anwar is the Tamil version of the Malayalam film by the same name starring Prakash Raj, Prithviraj, Mamta Mohandas in lead roles. The duo of Prakash Raj and Prithviraj is already a name to reckon in Kollywood after quality films like ‘ Mozhi’ and ‘ Vellithirai’ . After those soft films the duo is back with a thriller Anwar which is set in the backdrop of terrorism. Loosely inspired from the Coimbatore serial blasts, the film talks about how the youth are purposely lured by terror modules operating in the country. ‘ Anwar’ is a stylish thriller filled with events that are sure to give you a déjà vu feel The story goes like this. Anwar (Prithviraj) is an orphan youth who ends up in jail when once his hawala transaction fails. In jail he meets Babu Sait (Lal), a community leader cum businessman accused of masterminding the Coimbatore serial blasts. In jail Sait rescues Anwar from the attacks of the inmates and the police and takes him under his hood. Also in jail is Ayesha (Mamta Mohandas) who works in a chemical factory. She is arrested for allegedly providing materials for the explosives used in the Coimbatore blasts. When released with the help of Sait, Anwar joins with Sait and becomes his right hand man. Though he joins the terror group under the influence of Sait, Anwar has another hidden agenda in joining them. Anwar is later introduced to Basheer Bhai (Sampath), who assigns him to spearhead a serial blasts in Mumbai. But Anwar has different plans. Stalin Manimaran (Prakash Raj) is the Chief of Anti-Terrorist Squad of Tamil Nadu police who arrested Anwar and Sait before and is now again after the terror duo. The twists that follow should make an interesting viewing. Anwar is directed by Amal Neerad, a cinematographer- turned-director who started his career with Ram Gopal Varma’ s Factory. Though an action thriller, ‘ Anwar’ is said to have good music by Gopi Sundar.‘ Anwar’in Tamil is releasing on March 11, 2011

Tamil Anwar from next week

One of the most talked about Prithviraj film of last year, 'Anwar' will have its Tamil version released by the end of next week. With the dubbing of Prithviraj for its Tamil version, the works on dubbing department got completed. The movie is expected to greet maximum screens as it is said to be saleable property in the language. Directed by Amal Neerad, the movie featuring Prakash Raj and Mamtha Mohandas tells the story about the Muslim youths who are recruited into fundamentalist terrorist agencies. Anwar to Release With More Prints

Prithviraj’ s ‘ Anwar’ is getting bigger as the distributors are
fa scinated with the movie for
its stunning make. Al though
the movie was made in
Malayalam, it revolves around
the Coimbatore bomb blast that shook entire nation and
focalizes on how young sters
are lured towards terrorism.
The story revolves around
Anwar (Prithviraj) while
travelling with Hawala money is trapped by police and is
sent to jail. He is confined
behind the bar where a local
community leader involved
bomb blasts (played by Lal) is
also present. Soon he lures him into terrorism by helping
him get bail and is introduced
to the whole gang. Very
shortly he gets involved in
chain of events of bomb
blasts. But Anwar’ s motive is different that is revealed
during later point of time.

anti-terrorist mission leader.

‘Anwar’ in Tamil on March 11

There is always a curiosity factor when actors of caliber like Prakash Raj and Prithviraj come together. The combo that rocked in well made family films like ‘ Mozhi’ and Vellithirai’ is back again with ‘ Anwar’ .

Sun Pictures’ Hansraj Saxena has said that Anwar, a bilingual made in Tamil and Malayalam, was supposed to have been distributed by them but unfortunately this did not happen as Dhanush’ s Maapillai is in the line-up. But to make up for the loss, the satellite rights of Anwar have been procured by Sun. With a major production house and distribution company like Sun Pictures regretting not procuring the rights of Anwar, the expectations on this film have gone up. In Anwar, Prithviraj plays an action hero, perhaps the first time in his career. Prakash Raj and Mamta play significant roles in this film. The film will hit the screens on March 11th.

Anwar Dupped Tamil : Preview

Set in the backdrop of the Coimbatore bomb blast, the film opens with the introduction of a special team under Stalin Manimaran (Prakashraj), who arrests a local community leader Babu Sait (Lal) as a suspect in the bomb blast case. A Muslim youth Anwar (Prithviraj) is also arrested while passing on some hawala money and is sent to jail with Babu Sait and his team. Babu Sait helps Anwar in getting bail and lures him into his activities. Soon, Anwar becomes the most trusted and obedient right hand of Babu Sait. Anwar succeeds in planting a bomb in the police headquarters and is soon introduced to Basheer Bhai (Sampath), who selects him for a big dangerous project of chain blasts. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Amal Neerad for demanding an extra ten lakhs

Raj Zacharia, producer of Prithviraj's latest film Anwar, lashed out at his director Amal Neerad for allegedly demanding an extra ten lakhs in connectionwith the release of the film's dubbed Tamil version. "The film has already caused a loss of one and a half crores. Realizing this, both Prithviraj and Prakashraj have dubbed for the Tamil version without demanding any remuneration. But AmalNeerad demanded an extra ten lakhs as his remuneration to allow the print to be released from Gemini Labs," Raj said."Amal Neerad agreed to complete Anwar in 52 days with a budget of three crores. However, the film was completed in 78 eight days with a budget of five and a half crores. Amal used to take the first shot at 11 a.m. and wrap up the shooting by 6 p.m." Rajalso said that he is planning to file a complaint against AmalNeerad at the South Indian Producers' Association. Amal Neerad is yet to respond to the allegations.
