Urumi Tamil Version Music Recording

‘ Urumi' is a multilingual film in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and English and Santosh Sir was keen that we have music that incorporates the soul of the soil but would have a pan-Indian appeal, and sounds good and sensible in other languages too. So we played the music with the lyrics in Tamil and Hindi too to check out the effect and to ensure that it would not be too regionalised. What we have now is a kind of music that is earthy and orgaic

Santosh Sivan Releases Latest Visual Feast, ‘ Urumi’

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM (PTI) — Santosh Sivan-directed “Urumi,” touted as the first global film from Kerala, will soon woo world audiences with its English version, the filmmaker announced April 2.
The multi-star film, which has been in the news since the beginning of its making due to the pan-Indian star cast and multi-crore budget, will be brought out in a host of Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and in English.

The film will hit global theaters with a different screenplay and narration, Sivan said. “Generally, history is written from the perspective of the conqueror. But ‘ Urumi’ is an attempt to read history from the side of the defeated,” Sivan told reporters here.
The film, which opened Mar. 31 starring Prithviraj and Genilia D’ Souza, is rather a representation of historic al facts on a fictional
platform than an accurate narration of history, the ace director said.
“Urumi” is based on the arrival of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama in Kozhikode in the 15th century. Tamil choreographer and filmmaker Prabhu Deva, Bollywood actresses Tabu and Vidya Balan, and Malayalam actors Nithya Menon and Jagathy Sreekumar give more grace to the movie, the director said.
Prithviraj, who is also the co- producer of the movie, said “Urumi” was his dream project. “I have the advantage of being with the project right from the conceptual stage. I have even undergone a three-day crash training to learn the handling of an ‘ urumi,’ a weapon used by the bygone warriors of Kerala,” Prithviraj said.
D’ Souza explained, “It was quite different from the other roles which I did so far. The role of the
princess was quite challenging.” Sivan said he was planning to bring out the Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English versions of “Urumi” soon

URUMI Movie Review From [Technopark]

This is the first movie review I
am penning. There have been
movies that have excited me,
made me cry and some movies
made me think. Of course there
were others that were easily forgotten and faded into
oblivion. Urumi is one movie that
made me not only think, it made
me aware; and probably that is
the reason I am wielding this
keyboard to write a review for it. The latest offering from
Santhosh Sivan, the multi-lingual
historic (or rather history
inspired) movie Urumi stands out
elegant with scintillating
performance by its cast, wonderful cinematography which
is a visual delight. The most
commendable thing about this
movie is it’ s poignant and subtle takeaway message, which stick
on to the audience’ s heart leaving them pondering on a
highly relevant question. The movie starts off with two
youngsters Prithviraj (P) and
Prabhu Deva who are best
buddies trying to lead a
happening life albeit
impoverished and debted. Life suddenly takes them on a
different route when an
international mining company
approaches Prithviraj with
interest on his ancestral
property. There is also a league of politicians who talk about
bringing development to the
small village in Kerala behind the
conglomerate. P and P come to Kerala, where
they bump into Vidya Balan, an
NGO activist who is managing P’ s hitertho uninformed property
on his mother’ s instruction. She informs P about his lineage that
is associated with the 100+ acre
property and urges him to think
twice before selling it off. P also
needs the signature of Genelia,
a mentally retarded girl who is the adopted daughter of P’ s mother. Nonetheless as with any
modern day youth, he resents
lineage and prefers to take
care of his monetary issues and
benefits. However on a visit to
his property he gets captured by local tribal and their leader – Tamil actor Arya, who asks him
about his ancestors, to which P
has no answer. Here begins the
flashback, Arya reads out the
history of his great ancestor. The core of the movie – the story of Vasco Da Gama’ s arrival as trader and later the
hoisting of the Portugal flag in
Malabar in the late 1400’ s takes shape. It is in this
segment the true heroes of the
movie appear. Kelu Nayanar,
played with grandeur by
Prithviraj, inspired by the
martyrdom of his dad – Arya (Again a sterling performance)
decides to take revenge for the
atrocities committed by Gama
and his army. P is ably assisted
by Vavvali, a Muslim youth
played by Prabhu Deva and Arakkal Ayesha, played by
Genelia with élan. Jagathy
Sreekumar comes across as a
power hungry, shrewd and
unscrupulous minister to the
King. The story revolves around the Golden Urumi (Translation:
Curling Blade; A long traditional
Kerala Ribbon like sword) made
with the gold ornaments of
women and children whom the
Portuguese butchered. This urumi stands out as the symbol
of Kelu’ s revenge. It survives centuries to be handed over to
the new age P who wakes up to
the importance of his lineage
and historical tradition and
decides not to sell the land,
leaving politicians and representatives of the Multi-
national mining company aghast. The repeat of actors in the new
age as a representation of their
roles donned in the 1400’ s story is the catalyst behind the
idea of sending out the social
message that people who had
unwittingly or ravenousness sold
our land to foreign powers exist
in this new era. Even though the movie is a commercial pot boiler
with comic tinge, romance, songs
and thrilling revenge, the
underlying message stands out
clear and loud gaping at the
audience. India was always the most
wanted jewel for conquerors
and invaders. She has been
plundered, looted, raped and
violated for selfish reasons of a
few power hungry, selfish natives. It took a Gandhi and
several courageous martyrs to
help us rise from the ashes of
slavery. Alas! We are living in the
age when history repeats!
Today they have come back as MNCs and global conglomerates
having interest in our soil,
water and all available
resources, including the much
demanded human resources.
Today in the name of globalisation and development
unscrupulous politicians and
businessmen sell our land and
it’ s tradition for power and money. We the people – you and I, take pride in living a
comfortable ‘ decent’ life, with the pay packets of MNCs. We
have forgotten our culture, our
land, the scent of our soil and
live in a fool’ s paradise. We have forgotten tradition, agriculture,
and instead dream about
providing luxury apartments for
our old parents. What pains me is that we don’ t know or even try and find out
who our ancestors are, they
may be someone whose
sacrifices might help you hold
your head in a pride that only
an Indian can boast of. Our great great great great
grandparents may have made a
mark in history that we and the
world may have conveniently
forgotten.

Genelia: ‘ There’ s very interesting chemistry between Prithvi and me’

Genelia D’ Souza couldn’ t have asked for a better debut in
Malayalam cinema. She will be
seen as a warrior princess in
celebrated cinematographer
Santosh Sivan’ s Urumi. The actress shares her excitement
and the biggest challenges of
this project in an exclusive
interview with rediff.com’ s Radhika Rajamani.
What was your first reaction on
getting this role?
I met co-producers Mubina and
Santosh Sivan in Mumbai and
they explained the film to me. I was extremely busy then, and
wondered how I would do it. At
first it meant excitement. Then
the thought came to me that it
was a new industry, too, as I
had not acted in a Malayalam film before.
What excited you about the film?
Sivan told me it was something I
had never seen before. Everyone
comes to you saying the same
thing, but he has the reputation of making an actor do what she
has never done before and
presenting her in the best
possible way. Ayesha’ s character is a warrior princess without her
kingdom.

Did you read up for the role, or
was your acting based on
Sivan’ s brief? Santosh Sir had done two years
of research on this. He had the
pictures and the paintings. Since
he sketches, he had everything
drawn when I met him. Of course
there were little insertions here and there. I would say Ayesha of
Arakkal is an unsung hero. The
story behind her is so
interesting that it helped me
gauge what he wanted out of
me as an actor. You learnt horse racing and
Kalaripayattu for the film. How
exacting was it?
One had heard stories of horses
going ballistic, but I took to it
instantly. Sivan never allowed me to smile in the entire film and
that for me was one of the
biggest challenges, as I am
constantly smiling. On screen, you
have always seen me bubbly.
Here, Ayesha talks with her eyes. She enters the film with a
motive. I had to understand her
past before shooting for the film
because we did not show it.
Did you have any horse riding
mishaps? No. My horse was a very friendly
one. I am an animal lover. I
realised it was like how you
treat your pets. The more you
talk to them, the more they
understand you. I think that’ s what happened with me and my
horse Basha.
Were the Kalari sessions
exacting?
They were exhausting. When you
see others perform Kalari, you think you will pick it up fast but
it’ s an art, a difficult one. On the first day, my whole body ached. I
couldn’ t move the next day; it was very painful, but I practised.
We used to shoot from 7 am to
6 pm, and every evening from 7
pm to 10.30 pm, I practised
Kalari. I learnt to use the stick,
learnt sword fighting, learnt positioning the body, etc. I never
fought against girls in the film; it
was always guys. So, I needed to
have controlled aggression.
How did you overcome the
language barrier? It was difficult initially, but
eventually you get the hang of
it. Of course, you have to work
harder. It was tough, but I
pushed myself.
How was it doing the daredevil stunts?
Extremely difficult. I am an
adventurous person, so I
enjoyed doing all of it. But it was
a lot of hard work. I can’ t deny the fact that I had to practice
them.
How did you cultivate the
warrior look? Were you asked to
put on weight?
No. An Indian frame is a petite frame. Strength means having to
put on muscle and girls can
never put on muscle. It’ s a how you are draped, how you use
your eyes. Santosh Sir helped me
do that. Even Prabhu Deva
helped. It was lovely working
with Prabhu Deva. I always
thought he was aloof, but we got along beautifully. Prabhu
Deva has done a brilliant job.
What were the other challenges
you faced?
From the minute I entered to
shoot till I finished the film, it was a challenge. There was not
one bit that I can say wasn’ t a challenge. It’ s not something I’ ve done before. Ayesha is a Muslim
and I’ ve never played a Muslim character before. I had to have
kohl in my eyes, yet make them
look raw. I have not shaped my
eyebrows in the film. I had to be
aggressive, I had to be hurt.
How was it working with Prithvi? Prithvi is a lovely co-star who
knew a lot about the film.
There’ s very interesting chemistry between Prithvi and
me; I’ m petite and he’ s a warrior.
How was Santosh Sivan as a
director?
He was fantabulous. The way he
treats his artistes is a joy to
watch. There was no unnecessary waiting. If you are
excellent, he’ ll praise you and motivate you. He was also the
producer along with Prithvi. He
held the team together. With
Santosh there are so many
things that I have never seen.

Urumi – Movie Review: A must watch epic drama

Director Santhosh Sivan's much- awaited movie Urumi has hit the screens across the state. Although there are some dragging moments in the movie, its rich production values hold the attention of audience till the climax. It is an excellent effort by
Sivan and Prithviraj. Hats of to them.
Urumi is a historical epic film written by Shankar Ramakrishnan and Prithvi and Genelia's performances are the main attraction of the film. Deepak Dev's music, Anal Arasu's action, Sivan's camera work, Shankar's dialogues, costume designing, make up, choreography are other highlights of the film. But a few forcibly inserted songs and slow paced narration are the two minus points of the film.
The film is set in the backdrop of the fierce warrior clans of Northern Kerala in the 16th century and focuses on the cult of Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar. It is all about boy, who wants to avenge
the death of his father, who has been killed by Vasco da Gama. Santhosh Sivan's dragging narration in both first and second half tests the patience of
the viewers. The climax scenes seem to have taken from another epic film Pazhassi Raja.
The story starts with present generation and soon goes back to history. Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar (Prithviraj) sets on mission to kill Dom Vasco da Gama, the Viceroy of Portuguese Empire in India. But he faces lots of odds on his way to reach his target. He has to encounter many conflicts within the kinsmen, kings, ministers, peasants and Muslim warrior princess Ayesha (Genelia D'Souza) of the famed Arackal Sultanat. He has a forte, a legendary golden Urumi, which is made from the ornaments of women and children, who were burnt alive by Vasco da Gama. Kelu is supported by his childhood friend Vavvali (Prabhu Deva). How he creates his own army and starts movement against the first Colonial advance in India will form the crux of the film.
Santhosh Sivan should be applauded for his perfect casting and tapping out mind-blowing performance from each actor. Prithvi has delivered excellent acting and audience can not stop
loving him. He just looks awesome
in emotional and action sequences. As Vavvali, Prabhu Deva has done justice to his role. As Ayesha, Genelia's sword fight (kalaripayattu) scene are superb. Vidya Balan steals the heart of viewers with her item dance. Nithya Menon, Jagathy, Amol Gupte, Alex, Robin, Arya, and Tabu have also done justice to their roles.
The technical team of Urumi has done a wonderful job. Firstly, it is
Deepak Dev, who has composed six excellent songs along with stunning background score. Song 'Arya Kidukki Aaranu Aaaranu...' is melodious. Locations, choreography and picturisation in all songs are wonderful. Action sequences composed by Anal Arasu are also one among the major highlights of the film. Shankar's dialogues, Ekta Lakhan's costume, Renjith's make up and Sreekar Prasad's editing are also commendable.
Finally, it can be said that Urumi is a great movie, which has excellent acting, awesome technical values. It is a must watch movie.

Urumi Revie By Galatta

Ace cinematographer turned director Santosh Sivan's magnum opus Urumi is one of the much-anticipated films in the recent times. The reasons are many. First, it's a multi- starrer with a bench of talented artistes including Prithviraj, Genelia, Prabhu Deva, Nithya Menon, Vidya Balan, Arya and Tabu. Second, it is a multi- lingual, being made in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi and English. Third, it has a whopping budget of more than Rs. 20 crores, making it the second most expensive Malayalam film ever made after Pazhassi Raja. Now, the question remains: Does it live up to the expectations and hype created so far? The answer is a big YES. The film starts in the present day. Young Krishna Das (Prithviraj) and his friend (Prabhu Deva) are offered a huge amount by a big corporate for Krishna's ancestral property in Kerala. While he arrives in Kerala to sign the papers, Krishna Das is told some truths about the land and his ancestors in a flashback mode. In the flashback, we see a brave warrior (Arya) who wants to kill Vasco Da Gama, the Viceroy of the Portuguese empire in India. But the warrior is brutally killed by the invaders and his son Chirakkal Kelu Naynar (Prithviraj) sets out to take revenge with a golden Urumi (flexible sword) that he makes with the ornaments of dead women and children who were burnt alive in a ship under the instructions from Vasco Da Gama. Chirakkal Kelu Naynar is supported by his childhood Muslim buddy Vavvali (Prabhu Deva). In the journey to take revenge, Kelu meets warrior princess Ayesha (Genelia), who is also fighting against the invaders. Will they be able to kill Vasco Da Gama? This forms the rest of the film. The main plus point of the movie is that though it is made as a period drama, Santosh Sivan has avoided too many talks and bombastic dialogues about freedom struggle and heroism. It gives a new insight into how ancient heroes thougt during crises. Coming to the performances, Prithviraj as Kelu is outstanding. Though it is a difficult role, he has come out with flying colours, especially in the climax. Prabhu Deva does comedy and romance with ease and the chat song with Nithya Menen is superb. Genelia has shed her bubbly image to portray a warrior princess (nary a smile!) and her Kalaripayattu action scenes are thrilling. On the technical side, the main highlight is the fabulous, intricately crafted script by Shankar Ramakrishnan, beautifully supported by Santhosh Sivan's brilliant cinematography. Music by Deepak Dev and Sreekar Prasad's editing without any gimmicks are impressive. All in all, go for Urumi. It is a must watch!

Urumi gets bigger [Urumi Review]

A still from Urumi One of the most awaited
Malayalam movies of the year -
Urumi - finally released on the big screen on March 31 st . Though the film released just a
day prior to the World Cup, it
succeeded in attracting enough
eyeballs to make it a success.
And now, after the Malayalam
version has been getting great feedback, the makers have
decided to release the film in
Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English.
According to an industry insider,
“Initially, there were plans to release the movie in all the five
languages simultaneously. Later
it was decided to just go ahead
with the original Malayalam
version as the producers didn’ t want to take a risk.” We hear that since the movie is
a period drama, the makers
were uncertain about how it will
be received by the audience.
However, after Urumi hitting it
off well in its very first week, they are now sure that it will do
well if dubbed in other languages
also. The source added, “The film has popular names like Vidya
Balan, Tabu, Genelia and Prabhu
Deva attached to it which is a
strong selling proposition for
Tamil, Telugu as well as Hindi
market.” Also, the producers are aware of
the growing interest in South
Indian films amongst the global
audience and therefore they are
looking at the English version to
attract eyeballs the world over.

Urumi Is Only Due To Prithvi's Belief In The Script

Shankar Ramakrishanan, the scriptwriter of the new movie 'Urumi' that has become the talk of the town, says that it was only due to its star Prithviraj';s beliefs in the script that the movie happened.'I owe it to Prithvi for believing in me and for taking me to the sets of Raavan to met Santosh Sivan' says Shankar. Santhosh Sivan, on the other hand, was very open and was ready to move away from another typical adaptation and considered Shankar's take on the arrival of vasco Da Gama and its impact on Kerala's sociopolitical history to be a worth plot for a big mvoie. The universally acclaimed cameraman- director also advised Shankar to set a space-time correlative in narration, which is now applauded as one of the movie's highlights . He also approved the scriptwriter's back stories and added local flavors to the narratives. But the English version of 'Urumi' which is getting ready in the edit rooms, will take a different stance and different structure from the Malayalam version. Heavily impressed by the work of Shankar , Santhosh Sivan has already offered him to write for his next directorial venture which is tentatively titled as' Music room'.The project will be planned as a modern day musical, which will be a bit different from the regular song and dance cinemas
