Prithviraj : "My recent films have not come up to my expectations"

Young superstar Prithviraj says he is happy that he could be part of a film like 'Arjunan Sakshi'.
"I would admit that most of my recent films have not come up to
my expectations. When you hear the story, it sounds very promising. But on screen, it might
look different. I only do films that
I like genuinely," said Prithvi while interacting with a prominent Malayalam weekly.
"Films I like need not be liked by everyone else. But I am happy that I could act in films like 'Arjunan Sakshi'. I believe that it was a film that deserved to be created, and that the issues that it dealt with, really warranted a discussion," he added.
'Arjunan Sakshi' was directed by Ranjith Sankar. Prithviraj would have two releases soon, 'City of God' directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and the magnum opus 'Urumi' directed by Santhosh Sivan.

Many wanted to write about
after release experience of
Arjunan Saakshi .So here it goes.


I was actually thrilled after
meeting the censor
committee.They loved Arjunan Saakshi
whole heartedly.

Reports after the first show was
not unanimous as we
expected. Actually I was facing
such a scene for the first
time.Actually cant help it.Once
you release a movie,thats something totally out of your
control.The audience has all the
right to like or dislike it.


Many loved Arjunan Saakshi.Many has issues
with it.The fact remains that I
still love it:) Arjunan Saakshi is always gonna be
a very dear film to me for a
number of reasons.


One shocking realisation was
that the people who were
dissappointed said they were so
coz they went to see my movie
after passenger.Seriously did not
believe there would be an audicene going to a hall just to
watch my movie..thats scary!

And the best part after all this
is that there is still so much of
love and caring around.I was told
once you go through fire in
movies, you find yourself all alone
and separated. Some how I feel so surrounded with so much
support from all corners!
Probabaly even more than when
passenger was screening! Blessed!

Arjunan Saakshi is Not Bad

he second film of any director is
very important to gauge
whether he has got staying
power or no; especially if his
first film was well received or a resounding success at the box
office.
Director Ranjith Sankar's first film Passenger starring
Srinivasan and Dileep was a
surprise hit of 2009. After two
long years, he returns with
Arjunan Saakshi starring
Prithviraj. So what's the verdict? Let's find out.
The film tell's the story of a
young architect Roy Matthew
(Prithiviraj) who has spent his
life outside the state but has
now returned. As luck would have it, he is mistaken for
Arjunan who in a letter to a
newspaper has claimed to be the
only witness to the murder of
the city's former collector Firose
Moopan (Mukesh) and is harassed from every side
because of this. He is hounded
by both Firose's killers and the
media.
The seed of the story (also
credited to the director) may have been inspired by the 1941
Hollywood classic Meet John Doe,
but the comparison stops at the
letter sent to a news paper
office. The movie then goes on
to show how Roy single handedly brings the guilty to the book.
Though technically this film in
some parts is better than
Passenger, there are a few
glaring blemishes like the action
sequences, particularly the car chase that looks unreal and a
bit stretched. Where it wins is in
the character building. The topicality of the subjects
grab our attention completely
like the scenes where Roy is
shown carrying a fatally injured
subordinate on his shoulders to
the hospital because of a traffic jam caused by road block s
created by a few property
owners in the city's prime
locations. Prithviraj armed with a 'devil
may care' attitude is a winner all
the way. He looks dapper and
suave as Roy. He even brings to
the fore the playfulness of
today's youth in the initial scenes. Ann Augustine, who plays
a newspaper journa list Ajali
Menon, ably supports Roy in his
fight against corruption. The supporting cast that
includes veterans like Jagathy
Srikumar and Nedumudi Venu is
aptly cast though Biju Menon,
Suresh Krishna and company
who handle the villainy department have hardly
anything to do as far as acting
goes. They do however look
menacing which they do with
aplomb. In the final analysis, Ranjith's
much awaited second film does
prove that he has the staying
power.

Interview Of The Week: Ranjith Sankar

The first image a typical software engineer brings to mind is that of a really busy person running after deadlines and deliveries. One particular software engineer who works at Nest, Ernakulam, however, always has the time to pursue his first love - cinema. Meet Ranjith Sankar, Malayalam filmmaker.
With his second directorial venture Arjunan Saakshi successfully running in movie theatres across the state, Ranjith Sankar is a happy man. He believes that you will always find time for what you really want to do. “I love to write. Before coming into movies, I wrote scripts for television serials like ‘ Nizhalukal’ and ‘ American Dreams’ ,” he says. “Cinema, I realised, is a director’ s medium. We have to direct if we want films that we desire for.”
On ‘ Passenger’


Ranjith had the idea for his much-appreciated first movie ‘ Passenger’ as early as 2003. But it was realised only in 2009. However Ranjith is not disheartened. “There will always be difficulties. But you would not feel so bad about it when you are going after something you really love.” Some traits of the character done by Sreenivasan in Passenger was inspired by an acquaintance, says Ranjith. “I knew someone called Sudeendran, who hails from Irinjalakuda. He would come by train everyday and fall asleep when the train passes from Chalakudy to Aluva puzha. He used to be very excited about the festivals in his hometown.” Dileep’ s character in the movie is however an ideal one that ‘ we all hope to see more of’ , he concedes.
Ranjith never expected ‘ Passenger’ to receive the kind of recognition it did. “I am quite happy with the response. I think, more than anything else, it is team work that helped.”
On ‘ Arjunan Saakshi’


Arjunan Saakshi has no semblance with Passenger, except an underlying message that both movies convey - that one person could make a lot of difference. Says the director about his second venture: “I am very happy with Arjunan Saakshi. Personally I like it more, maybe because it is so recent and Passenger is a little distant now. Arjunan Saakshi was taken from a youth perspective. It is a commercial film that addresses social issues.” Ranjith says that many commented to him about the villains in the film not being strong enough. “Villains are also people like us. They have their comfort zones, their weak points. Similarly, Roy Mathew (lead role played by Prithvi Raj) is also another human being who just happens to be drawn into the story and gets involved in it.”


Ranjith Sankar On films, filmmaking

The director does not work with plans and schedules. He does not believe in switching to a new movie as soon as one is over. “We must have a desire to take a new film. At a given point of time, what I think is right becomes my film. There are two reasons why you should not just go on a filmmaking spree. One, a lot of people are going to see it. So it should have some positive message. Even if it does not push them forward, it should not
pull them behind. Second, there is a lot of finance involved. We should at least get back the amount spent on the movie.” The director agrees he is toying with a new story idea, but it is not time to reveal it yet, he says.


Among the actors he has worked with, Ranjith is in his comfort zone around Prithvi Raj. “We belong to the same age group and we share similar tastes in cinema.” Ann Augustine who plays the female lead role in Arjunan Saakshi has a lot of potential, Ranjith believes.
Taking new actors is based on the script of a film, Ranjith says. A new director on the other hand, should have an outlook in life. “There are only 10 or 15 original stories in this world. People have told it so many times over the years in different
ways. Everyone thinks differently. Technology only plays
second role. Your outlook is what matters. I tell new people who are interested to enter movies, to develop such scripts.” To Ranjith, his job means a lot too because it is what supports him in pursuing his love for cinema. “I do not work in cinema expecting money. It is my job that gives me that freedom.” Cinema, he believes is a sea and ‘ we are like waves who come and go’ . “No matter who comes and leaves, there will always be cinema,” speaks a true lover of celluloid.

Arjunan Saakshi Hitz In Kerala!!!

Director Ranjith Sankar, who surprised everyone with the well made movie Passenger is back with Arjunan Saakshi. The film starring Prithviraj and Ann Augustine talks about the need to be responsible and vigilant citizens in this country. Roy Mathew (Prithviraj) is an architect, who has lived outside Kerala for most of his life, but has come back to his home-town to join a real estate firm. Meanwhile, a journalist Anjali Menon (Ann Augustine) gets into trouble when she publishes a letter from an unknown person called Arjunan, who has some crucial clues concerning the murder of the former district collector Firoze Mooppan (Mukesh). Soon after, Roy starts hogging the limelight as he is mistaken for ‘ Arjunan’ . The young man is totally shaken up by the sudden happenings as he has no real idea about the dramatic turnaround of events and he is soon targeted by some goons. Well, we won’ t play spoilsport and reveal much about the story as the highlight of the film is some of the surprising twists in the first half. In fact the initial scenes are genuinely thrilling and there are some really nice moments that hit you straightaway with its sincerity. However, the second half has less twists and turns compared to the first. Ranjith, who has written the script besides directing it, has infused honesty into the story and has some genuine message to convey. The way in which Roy gets into the psyche of Arjunan is indeed interesting. But things get a bit preachy and predictable, especially towards the end and the script has some loose ends which raises question marks on the minds of the viewers. One of the highlights of the film is the spectacular visuals by Ajayan Vincent. Biji Bal’ s music is good as well. The anxieties of any “ordinary” citizen who can do nothing much other than rue about corruption and nepotism in our country, is perhaps reflected through Prithviraj’ s character. The hero looks fine and delivers a nice performance. Ann Augustine, who shot into fame with her title role in Elsamma Enna Aankutty, is fine. The rest of the cast have also done their roles well. No two ways about it, Arjunan Saakshi is certainly in a different league, when compared to the usual crop of films that we see in Malayalam nowadays. Still, one gets the feeling that the film is more inclined to the social issues which are being focused rather than on a gripping, cinematic experience. It makes you think about the state of affairs around you, which may be an achievement in itself.

Filmdum Report : Arjunan Saakshi Review

The young man who surprised the viewers with the well made ‘ Passenger’ , his debut film, has come up with a much better effort, aesthetically and technically, in ‘ Arjunan Sakshi’ . Controlled performances from the lead pair, Prithviraj and Anne
Augustine, add to the substance of the movie.
Though the title looks a little slow and tame, the film is made almost like a thriller. It is all about young architect Roy Mathew (Prithviraj), who leaves Mangalore to settle in Kochi, his native place. He comes into contact with reporter Anjali (Anne) quite accidentally and he is mistaken for Arjunan, who had written a letter to a daily saying that he knew the killers of district collector Firos Mooppan (Mukesh), but did not have the guts to come out into the open. Soon, Roy finds himself hounded by goons and ‘ quotation’ gangs. The question is: Who is the real Arjunan? Why is he afraid of speaking the truth? What will happen if he spills what he knows?
Ranjith Shankar, who has written the script of the film, has done the first half of the film brilliantly. The way he pictures Kochi blows our minds off! The car chase scene where Roy is attacked by a group of goons in cars is enthralling, to say the least. Surely, not many Malayalam cinemas can boast of such stylish frames and shots. Two hours flit past the viewers in a jiffy. Ajayan Vincent, you are the hero in the film! Images : Prithviraj in 'Arjunan Sakshi' As we know, the biggest hurdles to development are posed not by the poor, but the elite business people who have lots to lose when prime lands are acquired. They do whatever they
can, including murder, to get things done the way they want them to be done. Though ordinary people are witness to most of these atrocities, they are afraid to come into the open and speak the truth; because they are fearful of the consequences; because they fear
that the system would never come to their rescue. It is here that Arjunans, fearless warriors for truth are required.
Just like in his debut film, he focusses on the rampant corruption that has our country at its mercy. But, in his overzealousness, he loses the plot somewhere in the middle of the second half. Also, the climax of the film looks amateurish when compared to the early portions. The director could have taken a little longer than he did to plug a few holes in the script.
Prithviraj is brilliant in the role of
Roy and he gets good company in Anne. Though her part is rather small, she carries off her role like a veteran. Actors such as Nedumudi Venu, Jagathy Sreekumar, Suraj Venjaramood and Biju Menon have done just what they were required to. Bijibal’ s music is good. ‘ Arjunan Sakshi’ gives one a beautiful cinematic experience. For that alone, Malayali film buffs would be in debted to the young filmmaker.
For Prithviraj, reeling under the debacles of ‘ Anwar’ and ‘ Thriller’ , ‘ Arjunan Sakshi’ comes as a welcome relief. Indeed, here is a film he can be very proud of. Verdict Go, watch the movie!

crime is what the real Suspense
of the movie.



The Action scenes are one of the
highlight of the movie; you won’ t get a usual brawl between the
villain and Hero in this s movie.
There is only a single fight scene
in the movie. But what makes
the action scenes large is the
Chase Sequence in the Climax of the movie, explicitly

Director Siva, Cameraman Ajayan
Vincent and the director Ranjith
Sankar.


Technical
Ajayan Vincent’ s cinemato graphy was excellent.
Editing was
perfect. Art Direction is really
fantastic. Make up seems to be
realistic. BGM by bijibal was
excelent.


Script & Direction

Both the departments are
handled by Ranjith Sankar. He
had taken a very serious issue
happening in our society now as
the core of the movie. Movie was
engaging in the first half without a dull moment. The youth icon-
Prithviraj was excellent in many
scenes.Dialogues were
excellent,especially the dialogue
delivery of prithviraj must be
mentioned as awesome. Mukesh also in the movie. Ranjith
Sankar’ s hard work on screenplay is clearly visible in
many scenes.Once again Ranjith
Sankar succeeded as a director
and a script writer.


Negatives: Lack of punch scenes.Should
have added much more. But the effort is really
appreciable.Ranjith comes with a
fresh theme and it will surely hit
the Box-Office.

cleared by the Thiruvananthapuram Regional
Censor Board with a clean 'U'
certificate. The 2 hour film has also been
appreciated by the board
members. Prithviraj is said to be rocking
as the architect Roy Mathew. Ann Augustine is also said to
be very impressive in the film.
Arjunan Sakshi, is Prithviraj's
2011's first release. The film is opening big in
around 70 screens in Kerala on
Friday January 28. Arjunan Sakshi is crucial for
Prithviraj, as it has to take an
opening as big as Anwar and
hopefully a hit . The actor has to salvage his
reputation especially after
Thriller's failure at the box-

Arjunan Sakshi’ To Be Releasing On This Friday

His second film, ‘ Arjunan Sakshi’ starring Prithviraj, Ann Augustine and Biju Menon in the
lead roles, is all set for a
January 28 release. Talking about his film, the young
director says, “‘ Arjunan Sakshi ‘ tries to communicate with the
new generation. The central
character is an engineer, Roy
Mathew, an ordinary man like
you and me; born in a middle
class family, well-educated and employed and financially secure.
He is in different to anything that
doesn’t directly concern him until he is eventually led to a
very important self-realization.” “I spent a couple of months wondering who should do the
lead role in the film, and finally
zeroed in Prithviraj. I felt that he
would add a lot to the
genuineness of the film in the
character of Roy. He is an intelligent actor who is
committed to the profession. He
shot for the film at four in the
morning with a raging fever. At
the same time, he is also a star
in the true sense of the word. For a director like me, it was
wonderful working with an actor
like him. I feel that the character
in ‘ Arjunan Sakshi’ would be one of the best ones that he has
