Rani most gifted actor around

much-awaited Malayalam flick
Urumi to hit screens. Talent scouting “I plan to approach Rani for the role once I’ m back in Mumbai,” says Kashyap, who has been
shooting Gangs of Wasseypur in
Benaras for the past few
months. “I was blown away by her performance in NOKJ.” Sources inform that Anurag was
impressed with Rani’ s performance in Sanjay Leela
Bhansali’ s Black. “Anurag has always felt that Rani is one of
the most gifted actors around.
But he didn’ t have an appropriate role for her. Now, he
feels Rani is perfect for his
next,” says a source. Not long ago, Rani made
headlines for her powerful outing
in Raj Kumar Gupta’ s NOKJ. Sources say he plans to cast
Rani in his dark comedy thriller,
Ghanchakkar.
“Right now, I’ m wrapping up the last draft of my script. Once I am
through, I will think about
casting,” says Gupta. The film will hit the floors by June. And unlike
NOKJ, Ghan chakkar requires only
one female protagonist.
Rani, on her part, has already
clarified that she is looking for
challenging roles. “I want to come out with two-three films every
year, but I’ ve not been really lucky in getting the roles that I
really want,” she said around the release of NOKJ.
Mean while, the buzz in south film
circles suggests that Kashyap’ s film could be a remake of M
Sasikumar’ s Tamil hit Subramaniapuram since he’ s “very impressed” with the film. In fact, Kashyap was recently in
Chennai for the audio launch of
Sasikumar’s second Tamil film, Easan.

Sequel mania in Mollywood

It is remake raj
in Malayalam
cinema. Nearly a dozen
old classics and
earlier box-office
hits mainly of the 1980's are going to be remade. Last week,Padmarajan's
Bharathan directed
Rathinirvedam was launched
with Shwetha Menon playing
the role made memorable by
Jayabharathi. Producer Suresh Kumar has tasted huge
success recently when he
re made MT Vasudevan Nair's
classic Neelathamara. The remakes are capable of
generating a feeling of
nostalgia, and have
tremendous recall value among
the audiences. This will
generate a box-office buzz around the film. A classic like Adoor
Gopala krishnan's Mathilukal
based on Vaikkom Mohammad
Bashir's novel which won a
National award for Mammooty
is going to have a sequel Mathilukalkappuram, to be
directed by Prasad. Sequels of popular movies
featuring Mammootty and
Mohanlal were being made for
the last so many years. Mammootty's CBI Diary Kurupu
is all set to come out with its fifth part. A part two of
August 1 with Mammootty in
the lead titled August 15 is all
set to release in March. Mohanlal is all set to do a
prequel to Rajavinte Magan
with Thamby Kannanthanam
directing.

The super hit
Naduvazhikal from the
Mohanlal-Joshi team is now going to be remade with
Prithviraj in the lead.

Two characters from different
hit movies gunning for each
other which has been tried
out before in Balram versus
Taradas is now once again
happening. Now Mammootty's King
character Thevalliparambil
Joseph Alex IAS is going to
take on Suresh Gopi's Bharath
Chandran IPS! Similarly all 1980's and 90's
comedies are also getting
remade or sequels are being
planned around them.
Ninnishtam Ennishtam,
Mukkillarajyathu, Malappuram Joji Mahanaya Haji ,
Meleparambil Aanveedu,
Kasargode Kadherbhai-3,
Pavam Krooran etc, etc are
now being remade or sequels
planned around them. In the next two years
Malayalam cinema will see a
festival of remakes and
sequels hitting the screens.

Is ‘Urumi’ Kerala’s most expensive film?

Does the ambitious project set in the 15thcentury follow in the footsteps of the historical, ‘Pazhassi Raja’?Well, Santosh Sivan would like his film, ‘Urumi’, to do all the talking and urges us to wait till mid-2011, when it is scheduled torelease. The cinematographer-director admits that ‘Urumi’, meaning a ‘curling blade,’ is the fictional tale of a group of Indians who plotted the assassination of the Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama. After much persuasion, the filmmaker who is in Chennai, reveals how the idea for the film took shape. “Growing up in Kerala, I saw so much of Portuguese influence in architecture and churches that it’s hard to ignore. That made me want to knowmore about him,” Santosh explains. “But‘Urumi’ is no ode to Vasco da Gama, the explorer who landed inIndia. It tries to show his other side,” offersSivam. He continues that while history may have crowned the Portuguese navigator for his feats, his entryinto India signalled thefirst sign of colonialism. “The film is my take on how the local people, who endured his imperialisttendencies, plot to assassinate him,” says the director. He explains that to thelocals, da Gama was a foreigner who treated them unfairly. Among the many crimes he is supposed to have committed is the burning of a ship with Muslim merchants returning from Mecca. “Isn’t it natural to imagine that they rebuked him? And it will be multilingual, in English, Tamil and Malayalam, as the movie was made at a time when we were all south Indians, with no language-based borders,” adds Sivam. While multitasking is a challenge for most filmmakers, Santosh is relieved about being the director and cinematographer. “I handle the camera forall my directorial ventures. It makes things easier for me as I have conceptualized the film,” he says. The film stars Prithviraj, Prabhu Deva and Genelia.“The first schedule of the shoot has been completed, and we will now shoot portions in Maharashtra and Karnataka,” he explains.
