To Sir, with love [Manikya kallu]

Director Mohanan's ‘ Manikya Kallu,' is a tribute to teachers for whom teaching is a passion. It has been quite some time since
Malayalam cinema came up with a film that touches our hearts. Films that leave you speechless, without the usual spurt of adrenaline, films that talk about people like us have become a rarity. A film about those special people – teachers – who light the spark of knowledge in us has become even rarer. Bollywood tried its hand at the genre with films such as ‘ Black' and 'Tare Zameen Par.' Director Mohanan, after the mammoth success of his debut film ‘ Katha Parayumbol,' focusses on ‘ inspirational teachers' in his latest film, ‘ Manikya Kallu.' Excerpts from a conversation wherein the director talks about the idea, and inspiration behind the film, and the challenges success bestows on a person. The idea and inspiration I was disturbed by the state of government-run schools in Kerala. I myself went to a government school and had had a memorable time there. ‘ Mash' (a colloquial usage for the term master) and teacher were an integral part of our lives then. They continue to hold a special place in their students' lives. For them, teaching was not just a profession, but a passion.
Such teachers are a rarity now. The sheer definition of school itself has changed over the years. Ideally it should be a place for a child to grow and nurture his or her talent. Schools should function as a platform for the teacher and the student to connect, in the most fruitful manner. But is it happening now? How many teachers are looking at the real pleasures of teaching? How many of them are willing to
mould their students' lives? How many of them are willing to be
the change that they want to see in this world? This film is a reality check on all those issues. The film The plot centres around Vannanmala Government High School - an almost dysfunctional school in a remote village in Kerala with just 50 students on their rolls. Vinayachandran, played by Prithviraj, is a newly appointed teacher who attempts to change the scenario. His job is not only to inspire the students to learn, but also to inspire his fellow teachers to teach. Vinayachandran also has a special reason to be there. And that is the twist and drama in the film. Cast and crew Prithviraj was the first choice for the lead since he, as an actor, is capable of carrying the subtle social message I want to
convey through the film. Only a popular actor can do that. The female lead has been enacted by Samvritha Sunil.
Chandni, her character, is a physical education teacher. The cast includes Nedumudi Venu, KPAC Lalitha, Kottayam Naseer, Anoop Chandran and Jagadish. The crew is almost the same as my previous film – with P. Sukumar wielding the camera, Ranjan Abraham doing the editing and M. Jayachandran composing the music. I have scripted the film. The producer is Gireesh Lal. The challenges The success of the previous film has its pros and cons. It makes
certain things easy in terms of your next project, but it will also make you more susceptible to criticism. You have raised the bar with your previous work and now you have to go higher than that. What do you do if you start from a 'perceived best'? It is a challenge that made me contemplate and wait for this so long before I began my next work. And the wait helped. I analysed the feedback I got for ‘ Katha Parayumbol' and noted down the elements that clicked. I also could place myself in the current filmmaking scenario. It was an internal audit wherein I tallied my aspirations with my capabilities as a creative person. And I got an equation that I am content with. So I will continue to work on my forte that is films
like ‘ Manikya Kallu,' which has both personal and socio-cultural angles to it.

Manikya Kallu Movie Review!

After mega Hit 'Kadhaparayumbol', Director M. Mohan's second flick "Manikya Kallu" released today(5th May 2011) with good opening and good response.
The movie stars Prithviraj as VinayaChandran (a School Teacher), Samvrutha Sunil (Sports Teacher) Nedumudi Venu (Head Master) and also casr includes Jagadish, Salim Kumar, Jagathy Sreekumar, Kottayam Nazir, Anoop Chandran,Anil Murali,
Suresh Krishna, KPAC Lalitha, Sona Nair etc.
Manikyakkallu is being produced under the banner of Gouri Meenakshi Movies.
The story happens in a government school(Vannanmaala Govt school) that had a glorious past but is now on the verge of being shut down as there are less than 50 students enrolled there. The teachers have lost all hope about making a difference to the situation and are busy with their personal activities. The
results for the final examinations are pathetic, to say the least. Considering all this, when a young teacher named Vinayachandran (Prithviraj) requests for a transfer to the school, it comes as a surprise to every one, especially to those working there.
The major highlight of the film is Prithviraj's performance. Manikya Kallu is a pleasant movie like M.Mohan's debut 'Kathaparayumbol', where you will find humor and sentiments in the right dose. M.Mohan who always steer clear of gimmicks has this time too given a classic film but with all commercial ingredients. His characters are very real and human.
Samvrutha Sunil gives an ok performance.Jagadish, Salim Kumar, Jagathy Sreekumar, Kottayam Nazir, Anoop Chandran,Anil Murali, Suresh Krishna, KPAC Lalitha, Sona Nair have given an outstanding performance. Songs by M. Jayachandran-Anil Panachooraan team apts for the theme.
Another main positives of the flick is Cinematography by P. Sukumar and Art creation of Santosh Raman. The script is also dotted with characters to give the feel of a microcosmic village and school surroundings. All others in the technical crew is in perfect sync with the mood of the theme, that really needed to
be addressed in this impact.
In the end, 'Manikya Kallu' turns out to be a delightful experience and is a simple or small film with a big heart!
Verdict: Good.

'Manikyakallu' opens in 64 centers

Prithviraj's first film after his marriage which was kept as a big suspense,'Manikyakallu' graces 64 centres today. The movie is also notable for being the second movie from the director M Mohanan, who created the big hit 'Katha Prayumpol' which was remade in many languages. But only the Malayalam original was a big hit while the rest including Rejnikanth's 'Kuselan' and Shaharukhs' Billa' didn't made results as expected. Though the original remained the biggest hit of the year, much of its credits went to the scripts of Sreenivasan, than the directorial efforts of M Mohanan. So, "Manikyakallu' with scripts from M Mohanan will remain a test for the young director, to prove that his debut hit was not a fluke , largely supported by Sreeni's screenplaY

No publicity for Manikyakkallu

Prithviraj's new
film
Manikyakkallu is
releasing today
(May 5) in limited
screens in Kerala. The film was censored and
cleared with an 'U' certificate
only yesterday evening. There has been no pre-release
publicity for the film. Why the
producers and distributors are
not promoting the film remains
a mystery. Manikyakkallu is written and
directed by M Mohanan whose
last release his debut film
Katha Parayumbol (remade in
Tamil as Kuselan and in Hindi as
Billu), was a super hit. Prithvi plays a school teacher
in a government school
spotting a Mundu. Samvrutha
Sunil is the heroine.

Multiple releases spoil the market!

Last week (April
29), saw
multiple
releases, and all
of them failed. Five films- City of God (released in some
places on April 22),
Bhaktajanangalude
Sradhaykku, Lucky Jokers,
Melvilasom, Mohabbath made it
to screens on the April 29 weekend. Sadly all the five bombed
miserably at the box-office,
though Melvilasom and
Bhaktajanangalude
Sradhaykku carried super
reports. There was hardly any publicity and the public never
knew that the films released. Says trade analyst and
veteran distributor KJ Joy:
"There was no release
strategy nor any kind of
publicity for the release of
these films. The Vishu biggies like China Town and Urumi had
blocked all better screens, yet
the producers went ahead and
released at their own risk. The
total loss from these five films
will be around Rs 12 Cr." But nobody seems to be
bothered as May will see a
record 10 releases. This
weekend will see Manika Kallu
and Seniors clashing in limited
screens.
